She Would Not Leave Home Without It

After a Saturday vigil Mass on an Enthronement Weekend I was standing in my normal spot in the back of church with a donation basket and extra Enthronement Packets (in case anyone needed extras). As the crowd started to thin out I noticed a couple of ladies who looked like they were waiting to talk to me.  They finally came up and said, “We were waiting in order to share our story with you about the Sacred Heart of Jesus” (and what an incredible story it would be).

They then explained in a slight Spanish accent how they were sisters living with their family in Cuba when Castro and the Communists took over the country.  In the beginning there was a period of time when those who wanted to leave the country could do so, but on the condition that they could not take anything with them from the house except the clothes on their backs.  They said that they took advantage of this and came to the United States but their mother stayed behind.  They continued to try to talk their mother into coming to the United States also and finally she agreed to do so.  When it came time to leave she was told that she could not take anything with her.  However she absolutely refused to leave the large picture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus behind which had been part of the family for years.  Finally the Communist authorities gave in and she was allowed to bring the picture with her to the States.  The sisters said that their mom lived with them until her death a few years back and that the picture of the Sacred Heart continues to hang in a place of honor in their home.  They said how they were so happy that others were being given the opportunity for this great blessing in their own homes.

(George note: I was touched by their story and I am sure that their mother’s reward in heaven is great because of her courageous stand in not backing off in the face of adversity through her great love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus).
